The Justice League in the Absolute Universe: First Appearance and Roster Explained
Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Absolute Evil #1 and the history revealed in Absolute Superman #20.
The Absolute Universe’s Justice League debuts in Absolute Evil #1, and its modern roster is made up of villains. Veronica Cale, Hector Hammond, Elenore Thawne, Ra’s al Ghul and the Joker claim the familiar name. This is a different continuity from the animated Justice League Unlimited.

First appearance: Absolute Evil #1
For the modern team’s introduction, start with Absolute Evil #1. DC released the one-shot on October 1, 2025. Al Ewing wrote it, with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Nesi. DC’s official announcement introduces the five villains coming together.
The distinction between a first published appearance and an in-story origin matters here: a later issue reveals that the League has a much older history inside the Absolute Universe.

Hawkman also serves as the group’s violent enforcer. As Den of Geek’s issue breakdown explains, these villains use the Justice League name to defend the world’s existing power structure against its emerging heroes. Their idea of justice protects their own authority.
Do not assume every character has the same role as their main-universe counterpart. Ra’s al Ghul, for example, is a major antagonist in Absolute Superman; DC’s announcement places Superman in his crosshairs. Reading him simply as a Batman villain would miss this version’s role.
What Absolute Superman #20 reveals about the ancient League
Absolute Superman #20, released June 24, 2026, adds a historical layer. Bleeding Cool’s coverage of the issue describes an ancient Justice League that imprisoned Teth-Adam roughly 3,000 years earlier.
The official issue synopsis names Superman, King Shazam and Hawkman as combatants in the current conflict. That list should not be treated as the ancient team’s membership. This guide does not assign names to those ancient figures without clearer identification.
Correction, September 29, 2026: An earlier version incorrectly presented that battle lineup as the ancient League’s roster. That list has been removed.
Batman and Wonder Woman’s first crossover
The villain team’s debut and the heroes’ first meeting are separate reading milestones. Absolute Wonder Woman #15 brings Diana and Batman together in Gotham. The story continues in Absolute Batman #16.
Those issues are useful for following the heroes’ connections, but a crossover should not automatically be described as the founding of a heroic Justice League.
A focused Absolute Justice League reading route
This is a selected route through the team’s introduction, the first Batman/Wonder Woman crossover and the Superman history reveal. It is not a complete reading order for every Absolute series.

- Absolute Evil #1 — The essential issue for the modern villain team’s debut.
- Absolute Wonder Woman #15 — The opening chapter of Batman and Wonder Woman’s first crossover.
- Absolute Batman #16 — The second chapter of that crossover.
- Absolute Superman #20 — The ancient League history discussed above; it falls within an ongoing Superman storyline.
- Absolute Superman #21 — The next chapter. DC describes this issue as the final battle with King Shazam.
If your question is simply where this Justice League first appears, begin with Absolute Evil #1. The crossover and Superman issues expand different parts of the picture; they are not prerequisites for that debut.
What about the next Absolute event?
In its February 19, 2026 ComicsPRO announcement, DC said its first Absolute Universe event miniseries was planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. That announcement alone does not establish a heroic Justice League roster or team name. Treat predictions about its formation as speculation until the published story or a specific official announcement establishes it.
