The Rarest Justice League Unlimited Action Figures: A Collector’s Field Guide

The hardest JLU purchases are often identification problems before they are price problems. Holiday gifts, convention sets, online exclusives and retail multipacks need different checks. This field guide helps you recognize eleven releases and decide what evidence to request before buying.

Scope: This is a collector watchlist, not a definitive rarity ranking or price guide. A limited sales channel does not prove a small production run. Production quantities below are attributed historical reports; where a total is not verified, we do not supply one. Marketplace links are searches, not endorsements of individual sellers or authentication of their listings.

Use the JLU action-figure checklist to compare releases and the packaging guide to recognize card styles. Existing package photographs below are reference images, not proof that a marketplace item is genuine.

Five checks before paying a rarity premium

• Identify the exact release. Match the sculpt, character combination, card and manufacturer markings.
• Define complete. Separate a complete loose figure from a complete multipack and complete original packaging.
• Ask for current photographs. Request front, back and close-up views of the actual item, including defects. Stock photographs cannot establish its condition.
• Compare completed sales. Use the same release, condition and packaging status. Include shipping; an unsold asking price or an undisclosed accepted offer is not a reliable market value.
• Check the seller’s terms. Read the description and return terms, and ask about repainting, repairs, replacement pieces or resealing before buying.

Holiday Hal Jordan

Release type: Private holiday gift; reported small production run.

A December 2006 retrospective dates the gift to the previous holiday season and reports 100 examples, with cardbacks signed by Bruce Timm. Treat that as an attributed historical report, not a factory inventory or a count of surviving figures. We have not independently authenticated the pictured example.

Before buying: Request clear front-and-back package photographs, close-ups of the figure and signature, and a documented ownership history. A signature or green card alone does not prove authenticity. Distinguish the holiday gift from a custom or a swapped-head figure.

The 2009 Green Lantern Origins set offers a different Hal Jordan: a flight-suit figure with a head that can be exchanged with the set’s Green Lantern bodies. A head swap from that set is not Holiday Hal.

Giganta

Release type: 2008 convention exclusive with an online sales channel.

The set includes a regular-sized Giganta and a larger version. It was not restricted to people physically attending Comic-Con: Mattel’s 2008 store announcement, reproduced by Action Figure Insider, included JLU Giganta among the exclusives offered online.

Before buying: Confirm both figures and both bases. Inspect the dresses for splits, the clear outer package for damage, and the interior display pieces if packaging completeness matters to you. OAFE’s hands-on review documents the contents and presentation. A loose large Giganta is not the full set; no verified production total is offered here.

Solomon Grundy

Release type: 2006 convention exclusive; reported production quantity.

Toy News International’s July 2006 coverage reported a 5,000-piece run, split between San Diego Comic-Con and Wizard World Chicago. This is contemporary reporting, not a current estimate of how many remain available.

Before buying: Separate figure completeness from packaging completeness. Raving Toy Maniac’s review documents the elaborate sewer presentation and stone-pattern outer box. Ask for photographs of every included layer and the figure’s finish; confirm which version is being offered before comparing prices.

Lobo

Release type: 2010 MattyCollector oversized single.

The animated Mattel Lobo is a different product from the six-inch DC Universe Classics figure. OAFE’s review shows the sculpt and unusually large blister card.

Before buying: Match the sculpt and packaging to the JLU release. Request a side view of the blister to check lifting or resealing, and inspect the card for creases and bowing. A high asking price does not establish either a low production run or a completed sale.

Parademon two-pack

Release type: MattyCollector two-pack, November 15, 2010.

TNI’s advance review documents the sale date and two matching Parademons; Action Figure Insider’s product record lists no accessories. The pair suits a repeated-trooper display, but the quantity in a pack should not be confused with the total production run.

Before buying: Check that the listing includes two figures. Compare paint, hands, limbs and armor for damage or repairs. Do not confuse this pair with the separate Darkseid/Kalibak pack or Parademons from another DC toy line.

Batman Beyond, Old Bruce Wayne and Warhawk three-pack

Release type: 2009 three-pack.

The pictured pack combines Terry McGinnis as Batman, Old Bruce Wayne and Warhawk. It offers a compact future-era display, but its appeal to both Batman Beyond and JLU fans is not a measured demand statistic.

Before buying: Confirm that all three named figures are present. Inspect Warhawk’s wings and paint, and compare any loose Batman to the pictured release. A seller’s mixed lot is not automatically the original three-pack. If you collect loose figures, decide whether paying extra for the package adds value for your display.

Future Static, Aquagirl and Micron three-pack

Release type: Late MattyCollector three-pack, August 15, 2012.

Mattel’s August sale announcement, reproduced by Action Figure Insider, identifies this trio. It was not the final JLU three-pack: the following September sale included another JLU set.

Before buying: Confirm all three characters and examine their ankles, paint and stability. Come, See Toys’ 2012 hands-on review provides comparison photographs. Do not treat “last ever” in a listing title as a reason to pay a premium.

Cyborg, Plastic Man and Mister Miracle three-pack

Release type: 2009 three-pack.

The set is useful for collectors expanding beyond the characters most prominent on television. The Figure In Question’s Mister Miracle review records this release alongside his earlier packs. A character name alone therefore does not identify the package a loose figure came from.

Before buying: Verify the Cyborg–Plastic Man–Mister Miracle combination, paint condition and any claimed accessories against the actual package. Avoid assuming that an accessory from a different release belongs with this three-pack. We do not have a verified production total for it.

Deadshot

Release type: 2007 three-pack with Big Barda and Martian Manhunter.

The pictured pack combines Deadshot, Big Barda and Martian Manhunter. Identify that exact combination before comparing listings: a loose Deadshot and a sealed three-pack are different purchases. No verified production total is available here.

Before buying: Confirm all three figures if the seller calls it a complete pack. Inspect Deadshot’s face and costume paint and ask about repairs. Compare the animated Mattel sculpt rather than relying on a listing that only says “DC Deadshot.”

Volcana

Release type: 2007 three-pack with Green Arrow and Hawk.

There is contemporary evidence of collector difficulty: Action Figure Insider’s April 2012 report describes requests for a Volcana rerelease and reports that none was then planned. That supports her historical reputation without establishing a production count or today’s market price.

Before buying: Request detailed photographs of the head, costume, joints and manufacturer markings. Compare them with the packaged reference and ask whether anything has been repainted, repaired or replaced. A well-made custom can be a valid purchase when clearly described, but should not be sold as an untouched Mattel release.

Star Sapphire

Release type: 2007 three-pack with Sand and Superman; later single-carded release.

The original multipack is not the only route to the character. The Figure In Question’s review records a 2010 single release and distinguishes its added effect piece. That difference matters when a seller labels a loose example “complete.”

Before buying: Identify which release you want before comparing accessories or prices. Check the display stand, face paint and costume finish. If your aim is simply to add Star Sapphire to a loose display, compare the later single with the earlier three-pack rather than assuming the multipack is your only option.

Use the release history, not the sales pitch

Holiday Hal’s reported gift run and Grundy’s reported convention quantity are different kinds of evidence from a collector remembering a difficult store hunt. Keep those distinctions when comparing prices. A later reissue, incomplete package or swapped head can change what a listing actually represents.

For the 2007 and 2009 multipack dates and character combinations, the community-maintained Mattel release list is a secondary cross-check, not production-count evidence. The linked contemporary announcements and hands-on reviews provide more specific support where available. No live sold-price dataset has been compiled for this guide.
